Federal Financial Aid — Title IV

Making Your Barbering Career Affordable

We believe financial barriers shouldn’t stand in your way. Learn about Federal Financial Aid (Title IV) for our Class A Barber and Cosmetology programs and how our team can guide you.

What Is Title IV Financial Aid?

Title IV refers to federal student aid programs administered by the U.S. Department of Education. These programs are designed to help students pay for post-secondary education, including specialized training in fields like barbering and cosmetology.

Brighton Barber Institute is an accredited institution, and our Class A Barber and Cosmetology programs are approved for Title IV funding. This means eligible students can access federal grants and loans to cover tuition, fees, and other essential educational expenses, making a professional career more attainable.

Our dedicated financial aid team is here to guide you through the process, ensuring you understand your options and feel confident about financing your education. Let’s make your barbering career a reality!

Types of Title IV Financial Aid Available

Federal Pell Grant

What It Is:

A need-based grant from the federal government that, in most cases, you don’t have to repay.

How Much:

Up to $7,395 per year (for the 2025-26 award year). The actual amount depends on your financial need (determined by the FAFSA), the cost of attendance, and your enrollment status (full-time or part-time) and program length.

Eligibility:

Based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) calculated from your FAFSA, your enrollment status, and other factors. Primarily for undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need.

Good to Know:

Pell Grants are an excellent resource for students with limited income, making barber or cosmetology school significantly more affordable.

Federal Direct Loans

What They Are:

Low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Education that you borrow and must repay after you complete your program, leave school, or drop below half-time enrollment.

Types of Loans:

  • Subsidized Loans: Based on financial need. The government pays the interest while you’re in school (at least half-time) and during a six-month grace period after you leave school.
  • Unsubsidized Loans: Not based on financial need. You are responsible for paying all accrued interest, even while in school.
  • PLUS Loans: Available to parents of dependent undergraduate students (Parent PLUS Loans) to help pay for education expenses not covered by other financial aid. Subject to a credit check.

How Much:

Loan amounts vary based on your year in school, dependency status (as determined by the FAFSA), and other aid received. For example, first-year dependent undergraduate students may borrow up to $5,500 (with no more than $3,500 of this amount in subsidized loans).

Good to Know:

While loans must be repaid, the federal government offers flexible repayment plans and options after graduation.

How to Apply for Title IV Financial Aid

Applying for federal financial aid is done through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Follow these steps to get started:

Complete the FAFSA Online

Visit the official FAFSA website at studentaid.gov to submit your application. You'll need to create an FSA ID to sign electronically. Use Brighton Barber Institute’s school code to ensure we receive your information. Provide required financial information (e.g., tax returns, income details) for yourself (and your parents, if you are a dependent student).

Tip: Apply early! The FAFSA typically opens on October 1st each year for the upcoming academic year.

Review Your Student Aid Report (SAR)

After submitting your FAFSA, you’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). This typically arrives within 1-5 days if you provide an email address, or 7-10 days by mail if you file a paper FAFSA. Carefully check your SAR for any errors and make corrections if needed through the FAFSA website. Your SAR will include your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is a key factor in determining your aid eligibility.

Verification (If Selected)

Some students are selected for a process called verification, where the school needs to confirm the accuracy of the information reported on the FAFSA. If you are selected, Brighton Barber Institute will notify you and request additional documents (e.g., tax transcripts from the IRS, W-2 forms). Please submit these documents within 10 days to avoid delays in processing your aid.

Receive Your Award Letter

Once your FAFSA is processed and verification (if applicable) is complete, BBI’s financial aid office will send you an official award letter. This letter will detail the types and amounts of financial aid you are eligible for, including any Pell Grant and/or Direct Loan amounts. Review this carefully and contact us to accept the aid offered or discuss any adjustments.

Stay on Track

To continue receiving federal financial aid throughout your program, you must maintain enrollment and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. Remember to reapply for FAFSA each year to renew your funding for the next academic period.

Processing Time: FAFSA processing by the Department of Education typically takes 1-2 weeks. However, if you are selected for verification or need to make corrections, this may extend the overall timeline. We strongly encourage you to start the FAFSA process early to ensure funds are ready when your classes begin!
