Types of GI Bill® Benefits for Barber School

Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)

Members of the Selected Reserve (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, Air National Guard) with a six-year service obligation.

Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA, Chapter 35)

What It Covers:

  • Monthly payments for eligible spouses or children of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition.

Eligibility:

Eligible dependents of qualifying veterans.

Am I Eligible for GI Bill® Benefits?

To use GI Bill® benefits at BBI’s Texas barber school, you typically need to meet one of these criteria:

  • Served at least 90 days on active duty after September 10, 2001 (for Post-9/11 GI Bill®).
  • Completed at least two years of active-duty service (for MGIB-AD).
  • Have a six-year obligation in the Selected Reserve (for MGIB-SR).
  • Be a spouse or child of a veteran with a service-connected disability or who died in service (for DEA).
  • Not have exhausted your GI Bill® entitlement (typically 36 months for most programs).

Additional Requirements:

  • Enroll in a VA-approved program (like BBI’s Class A Barber or Cosmetology).
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) during your training.

How to Apply for GI Bill® Benefits & Enroll at BBI

Using your GI Bill® for barber school in DFW is simple. Follow these steps to apply and start your training at Brighton Barber Institute:

Check Your Eligibility

Visit va.gov/education to confirm your GI Bill® type and remaining benefits. Use the VA’s GI Bill® Comparison Tool to estimate funding for BBI’s programs in Hurst.

Apply for Benefits with VA

Submit VA Form 22-1990 (Application for Education Benefits) online at va.gov. For dependents, use Form 22-5490 (DEA application).

Submit Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
